Sparkill, N.Y. - Five Spartans scored in double figures on Saturday afternoon, as the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team picked up their third straight victory, 94-83 over the College of Staten Island at Aquinas Hall Gym.
STAC improves to 18-8 overall and 10-3 in the ECC, while CSI slips to 9-16 and 5-8.
Derrick James recorded a team-high 17 points for the maroon and gold, while teammates Hartnel Haye (16 points), Troy'reon Ramos (15 points), Luis Risquez (13 points) and Tommy Kelly (10 points) also factored in the Spartans' totals by scoring in double digits. Meanwhile, JJ Chestnut tallied 18 points for the visiting Dolphins.
STAC shot 59.0 percent from the field (36-61), while CSI shot 42.9 percent (30-70) from the floor.
STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Nine Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Derrick James also led the maroon and gold with seven assists on the day.
- James hit 6 of his 9 field goal attempts and 5-of-6 free throws. Meanwhile, Hartnel Haye went 7-for-10 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the foul line.
- STAC out-rebounded Staten Island by a 44-27 margin, with Haye also grabbing a game-high ten boards for the Spartans.
- St. Thomas Aquinas swiped eight steals, with the Dolphins turning the ball over on 12 separate occasions.
- The Spartans earned advantages in two team statistical categories over Staten Island: Points in the Paint (40-34) and Bench Points (26-24).
- The game featured one and two lead changes.
- STAC's largest lead of the game came with just under eight and half minutes to play of Saturday's contest, when Spartans led by 22 points, 72-50, on a Luis Risquez layup.
- St. Thomas Aquinas led Staten Island 47-37 going into the halftime locker room and shot 64.5 percent (20-31) from the field.
- Troy'reon Ramos and Hartnel Haye led all scorers with 10 first half points apiece for the Spartans. Ramos shot 57.1 percent (4-of-7) and Haye shot 80.0 percent (4-of-5) from the floor.
STATEN ISLAND NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Eight Dolphins logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- JJ Chestnut led Staten Island with 18 points, while Aaron Goldstein (17 points) and Mitchell Wiggan (10 points) also scored in double figures.
- Chestnut also led Staten Island with six assists on the afternoon.
- Chestnut went 6-for-12 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Goldstein went 6-for-13 from the field, 3-of-8 from beyond the arc and 2-of-2 from the foul line.
- JJ Chestnut also grabbed a team-high six boards for the Dolphins.
- Staten Island picked up 12 steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 18 separate occasions.
- The Dolphins earned advantages in two team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Points off Turnovers (16-9) and Second Chance Points (15-12).
- Aaron Goldstein led all Dolphins scorers with seven first half points, while shooting 40.0 percent (2-of-5) from the field and 100.0 percent (2-of-2) from the foul line.
