The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team split with St. Michael's College to open the 2012 season. STAC fell 9-8 in their season opener and then went on to dominate the Purple Knights, 6-0 in the second game of the day. Maura Power pitched the shutout to pick up the win on the mound for STAC.
In game one, Megan Sweezy went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and scored 2 runs while Katie Meyers went 2-for-3 with 2 runs for STAC. Rachel Hannawalt hit an RBI double in the 2nd inning to score Sweezy and tie the game, 1-1. Sharis Ruiz reached on an error and Shelby Coyle scored to give STAC the lead. The Lady Spartans put together a 3 run third inning behind a Sweezy 3-run home run to give STAC a 5-1 lead.
St. Michael's chipped away at STAC's lead scoring one run in the 4th and then tying the game 6-6 with 4-run 5th inning. Hannawalt added a 2 RBI single in the top of the 8th to give STAC an 8-6 but the Purple Knights rallied 3-runs in their final inning to earn the win.
In game two, Maura Power went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs. Heather Clausen hit an RBI double to get the Lady Spartans started in 1st. Powers double in the 4th scored two runners and the Lady Spartan defense held on for a 6-0 win.
